Where to Golf: Cape Breton's Must-Play Courses

By Brian Weis

Welcome to Cape Breton, affectionately known as the "Magical Island," where the golf is as legendary as the views. Nestled off the coast of Nova Scotia, this golfer's paradise boasts not only some of the best courses in the world but also one of the most scenic drives on the planet - the Cabot Trail. Whether you're teeing it up on a cliffside green or winding your way along the rugged coastline, every moment on Cape Breton is a postcard-worthy experience. Here's your guide to playing, staying, and what to do in between rounds on this enchanting island.

Where to Golf: Cape Breton's Must-Play Courses

Cabot Cliffs
Location: Inverness
This links-style course feels like a throwback to Scotland, with rolling dunes and towering cliffs dropping off into the ocean. Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, it's as breathtaking as it is challenging. Just don't lose too many balls to the Atlantic!

Cabot Links
Location: Inverness
A walking-only course, Cabot Links is Canada's only true links course, where each hole presents stunning views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Don't let the sea breeze fool you - it might give you a helping hand or steal a few strokes.

Highlands Links
Location: Ingonish
Located in the scenic Cape Breton Highlands National Park, this Stanley Thompson-designed gem will make you feel one with nature - until you realize the greens are trickier than they appear.

Le Portage Golf Club
Location: Cheticamp
A less touristy, more local-friendly option with mountain views. It's a little more relaxed, but that doesn't mean you can take it easy on your scorecard.

The Lakes Golf Club
Location: Ben Eoin
An inland course with views of Bras d'Or Lake, this Graham Cooke-designed course is perfect for those who like to mix mountain and lake views with their golf. Plus, the finishing holes will test your nerves.

Bell Bay Golf Club
Location: Baddeck
Named after Alexander Graham Bell, this course will let you appreciate the genius of its design and views while you ponder how someone ever invented the telephone. The par-5 17th is an absolute beast.

Dundee Resort & Golf Club
Location: West Bay
An all-in-one golf resort offering laid-back rounds with views of the Bras d'Or Lake. Ideal if you like a stay-and-play experience without moving too far from your room.

Seaview Golf & Country Club
Location: North Sydney
Known for its friendly atmosphere and proximity to Sydney, this is a great warm-up or cool-down course. Plus, the views aren't half bad either.

What Else to Do: Beyond the Fairways

Explore the Cabot Trail
When you're not on the links, hop in the car and explore one of the world's most scenic drives. The Cabot Trail loops around the northern tip of Cape Breton and offers jaw-dropping views, hiking trails, and charming little towns along the way.

Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site
Located in Baddeck, this museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of the inventor of the telephone, who made Cape Breton his summer home.

Cape Breton Highlands National Park
Stretch your legs and explore the park's hiking trails, waterfalls, and wildlife. After a day of golf, it's the perfect way to get back in touch with nature.

Whale Watching Tours
Head to Cheticamp or Pleasant Bay to catch a whale watching tour. After chasing birdies, why not chase a few whales?

Celtic Music and Culture
Cape Breton has deep Scottish roots, so be sure to catch some live Celtic music at a local pub. Or, plan your trip around the Celtic Colours International Festival in October for a celebration of music, dance, and culture.

Getting There

Cape Breton Island is accessible via the Sydney/J.A. Douglas McCurdy Airport (YQY), which has direct flights from Halifax and Montreal. For those driving, Cape Breton is connected to mainland Nova Scotia by the Canso Causeway, making it a scenic road trip from anywhere in Atlantic Canada. If you're coming from further afield, Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) is your main gateway, about a 3.5-hour drive away.
With world-class golf courses, incredible scenery, and enough activities to keep even non-golfers entertained, Cape Breton Island is a must-visit for any golf traveler. Whether you're chasing pars, pints, or just a peaceful retreat, this island has it all.
